What to Expect

Marino Ballena National Park protects 13,000+ acres of ocean and coastal habitat, making it one of Costa Rica's most important marine reserves. The park is famous for its whale tail-shaped sandbar (Punta Uvita) that becomes visible at low tide—a natural formation shaped like a humpback whale's tail when viewed from above. This iconic feature makes for spectacular photos and creates calm, shallow pools perfect for families with young children.

The park offers multiple access points along the coast. The main Uvita entrance provides the easiest access to the whale tail formation. Playa Colonia (Ballena) entrance is quieter with excellent tide pooling and snorkeling opportunities. Both beaches feature soft sand, clear waters, and minimal development.
