Vibe

Playa Ventanas is one of Costa Ballena’s most distinctive beaches—a compact tropical cove framed by lush jungle, palms, and rocky headlands just north of Ojochal. Its signature attraction is a pair of natural sea caves, or “windows,” carved through the coastal rock by years of Pacific waves. In fact, ventanas means “windows” in Spanish.

The beach has a relaxed, local feel and is popular with both Costa Rican families and visitors. It’s an easy place to spend a few hours swimming, walking along the dark-sand shoreline, relaxing under the palms, or simply watching the waves surge through the caves.

Best Suited For

Families, couples, photographers, beach lovers, casual swimmers, nature explorers, and anyone looking for an easy half-day adventure close to Ojochal. Particularly worthwhile for guests who want to experience one of Costa Rica’s more unusual beaches without committing to a full-day excursion.

What to Expect

The highlight is at the northern end of Playa Ventanas, where two large openings penetrate the rocky, jungle-covered headland. Low tide is the best time to visit because the receding ocean makes it possible to approach and explore the caves on foot. As the tide rises, waves begin rushing dramatically through the openings—impressive to watch from a safe distance, but a signal to stay out of the caves.

The beach itself is relatively small and easy to explore. Depending on the day, local vendors may offer food, cold drinks, beach chairs, and shade canopies, and basic toilets and showers are available. Visitors describe it as a good swimming and beach-day destination, although—as everywhere on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast—ocean conditions and currents can change quickly.
